Named for General Joseph Warren

The County was formed in 1825 and was named for General Warren, a pioneer physician and soldier killed at Bunker Hill.

Claims to Fame

Wyatt Earp, the famed lawman and gunfighter of O.K. corral fame was born in Monmouth in 1848.

Western Stoneware Company was founded in Monmouth in 1873 (closed in 2006).

Holt House, on First Avenue in Monmouth, was the birthplace of the Pi Beta Phi Sority in 1867. Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority was also formed in Monmouth in 1870.

The Warren County Library opened as a reading room in 1868. In 1870, William P. Pressly donated funds for a building - the first public library in Illinois. That building now houses the Buchanan Center for the Arts. Pressly erected a second building for the library in 1907. This remains part of the current library building. Twelve branches were opened in 1921, and four remain open in Monmouth, Alexis, Kirkwood, and Roseville.
