Origin of Name of Alexis, Illinois, USA

Alexis was first named Alexander by Col. Robert Holloway and J. E. Alexander who platted the town in 1870. In light of another Illinois town being named Alexander, the founders wanted a new unique name. About this time, Grand Duke Alexis, heir to the Russian throne was visiting the country hunting buffalo. As an eligible bachelor, the Grand Duke caused a sensation with the ladies. Col. Holloway, with the Grand Duke's consent, changed the post office name to Alexis.
