Illinois Women and the Civil War
With over 250,000 Illinois men serving as volunteer soldiers, virtually every
Illinois woman was the daughter, sister, aunt, wife or mother of a soldier.
Many Illinois women had family on both sides of the war. A few Illinois women held more dramatic roles during the war as nurses and even
as volunteer soldiers.
The goal of this page is to help you explore some of the experiences of Illinois
women during the American Civil War.
