Final Report of the Military Expedition from Chicago to Cario - May 1861

General R. K. Swift was ordered by Governor Yates to take a military force to secure Cairo. Cairo was perceived as a strategic point, as it is at the junction of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.

Capture of the Arsenal at St. Louis

In April 1861, the Secretary of War issued an order for 10,000 muskets from the St. Louis Arsenal to arm Illinois troops. At that time the arsenal was in the in control of non-Union forces.
